Bet You Wonder Where We've Been

Abbey woke up very sick during the wee morning hours of her birthday. Thankfully we had her party two days before, because from that point on it seems like we fell off the planet for a few weeks. She started with the flu - fever, congestion and coughing, for a week. The next week she developed an ear infection and we braved the Chinese children's hospital by ourselves, it was quite an experience. We survived it and got ear drops and antibiotics and as she neared the end of those she had improved a lot so we took off for a Safari park in Guangzhou over the May 1st holiday weekend. While at the park Abbey got very sick again and by the time we got home I was very concerned. Fevers again, congestion in her ears, nose, and eyes. Very lethargic. This time I went to the $expat clinic where I can communicate somewhat clearly with a Chinese doctor who speaks a good deal of English. We changed antibiotics and started nose drops. We both felt she needed lots of rest to recover so I took this week off work and quarantined ourselves. Lots of Candy Land, Hello Kitty painting and Coloring, The Ladybug Game, many tea parties, and a complete saturation level with Charlie and Lola. We didn't leave the house for days. She developed intestinal problems from the antibiotics so we went back to the doctor for good bacteria supplements and began electrolytes too. She is still not well, but so much better than she was. We've been slowly coming out of seclusion - venturing out Thursday evening for a special meeting, and then on Friday for a friends birthday dinner, and then last night for special dinner for the orphanage volunteers. Abbey was so excited to get out and see friends, she almost went a little crazy with joy. We discovered a little orange bus that evidently comes to our back gate every 15 minutes. Wish we had known about it from the beginning. It's just one kuai and goes to Holiday Plaza, which is a very nice shopping center. We took a brief run there to H & M and I got two t-shirts and a pair of earrings. I am ready to burn the clothes that we brought in our suitcases, I am so sick of them. About the 4th day into our sequestering Abbey began issuing commands to me, such as, "Get my milk," or, "I don't want this one, I said that one!" Is this a normal part of the healing process? I decided she was feeling good enough to start tapering off on some of the TLC and bringing a little reality check back into the picture. So even though she's still not well I've reintroduced some of our normal discipline and began easing off on some of the special treats, like doling out Easter candy (what little I have not yet eaten) every time she has to take medicine. I was almost in tears yesterday just from being worn down from the situation but then had the perfect break in the evening with our orphange team's Turkish Barbeque. I put on my new top and huge purple shell earrings, took Abbey over to our preschool to play with her friends, and headed over to chat with all our wonderful volunteers and teachers. I must say I feel so much better and I can't wait to go back to work tomorrow!
Our Sunshine Foundation website is now up and running. Be sure to watch the little movie. With the donations of friends we saw over our CNY trip home we have been able to get the children a playhouse, set of preschool blocks, books, and center time toys. They also got a children's pool filled with rice for fun sensory play with funnels, measuring cups, etc. THANK YOU!!
This has nothing to do with anything but I want to add a picture, so here's a random one. Abbey, our dear Chana, and our wonderful new friend Michelle grabbing a bite at Luo Hu Commercial City in the midst of a wild, unplanned for, shopping episode. We love Luo Hu!

Sorry to hear Abbey has been so sick. It is equally awful for mom too. I usually have two days of compassion in me and then I start being CRANKY nurse. :) I don't usually post replies but check your blog often. This time I thought my two cents worth might help .....The few times the kids have had to take antibiotics (I try to avoid them) and developed those nasty 'intestinal problems', I've always given them yogurt because its cultures are similar to the 'good bacteria' that the meds have killed. Don't know if you feel safe with the milk products over there now but thought it might help. Sometimes it seems like the more medicine they wind up taking, the longer it takes them to fully heal. Mom always swore by vitamin C even before it was cool. She claims it 'firms up the cell walls'. I've never bothered to explain to her that only plants have 'cell walls' but I do think she is right--it helps one heal quicker.

Happy Mother's Day,

So sorry to hear that Abbey has been feeling so badly. I got a big kick out of her being in command mode! Oh, stop that in the bud, kiddo! I am glad you caught on so quickly! Tell Abbey that I am praying for her to get completely well and for you I will pray that you have immeasurable patience and kindness! Lots of Love and Prayers!

So sorry to hear that sweet Abbey hasn't been feeling well, but glad she is doing better. I hope you are too. It is always so hard for mom to have a sick little one, you feel bad for them and then start to feel bad that you feel like they are taking advantage of the TLC (not knowingly of course for either of you). Know that both are completely normal and felt by us all!!! Congrats on surviving!!! Hope you had a nice Mother's Day, you sure deserve it. Love and miss you. STAY WELL!

We miss you both! So sorry to hear Abbey was not feeling well. But praising Him that she is healing. Always such a challenge as a parent to give the TLC and discipline at the same time. I can relate, the balance of the two is hard! As soon as they are on the up and up, here comes attitude and the demands all of a sudden. The girls have been sick on and off for the last two months and we have been dealing with the same thing. The challenging moments, that is how we earn our mommy badge.
You are a great mom! Missed you at Shepherd's House on Mother's Day.
Loved your comment on our blog. Can't wait to hear about the hospital experience. I am sure it was nothing like Los Robles. My dad was in China for just shy of a day on business. Said it was nothing like home.
You continue to amaze me though. You have been so couragious in trying new things and soaking up all of China. Looking forward to your return in a couple of months.
Know that u both are loved!

So glad for both of you that Abbey is feeling better. Happy Mother's Day and belated happy birthday to Abbey!

I'm so impressed with you for all you and your group are accomplishing in China. While it must be incredibly difficult to miss your family and comforts of home, to be able to share what you are sharing and also to experience Abbey's heritage with her is a double blessing. Any thoughts about staying on another year?

I would love to do what you are doing, but am afraid I wouldn't have a job to come back to, meaning they wouldn't hold it for me. Thus, thank you for blogging as I'm enjoying living vicariously through you.

Hug Abbey tight, she is a beautiful girl, inside and out!

I am so glad little Ms Abbey is feeling better and getting back to her self again. It is so hard to deal with a sick child.

Love the sensory play with the rice. Good thing it was not there when Annalise was around or you would of had rice everywhere like I still do.

Oh man, so sorry to hear of Abbey's lingering illnesses. Glad to hear she's on the mend, and that you got to spend some quality time with her while she was recuperating.

I emailed you the director's card - it's a HUGE file, I hope you can open it (but if you can, it's going to be easy to read!). Let me know if you can't open it or don't get it.

Praying Abbey is well and whole now. You are a remarkable woman and mother. Is there anything I can send? Seriously...let me know!

When displaying your own home, it is advisable to eliminate all your private details before anyone sights the home. Potential customers do not wish to see lots of family members photographs and children's artwork everywhere. The point of observing a house is so the customer can imagine their selves in your house. It makes it difficult to do when you have a person else's loved ones staring at you. Cougfg45ntl
